Diva Thanh Lam Responds to the Claim: “AI Sings Better Than Singers”

After nearly four decades in music, Vietnamese diva Thanh Lam continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences with her distinctive voice and artistic individuality. The veteran artist recently shared her candid thoughts on the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the music industry.

AI is increasingly shaping the music world — from composition and arrangement to performance. This growing trend has sparked heated debates in many countries.

Speaking with Dân Trí reporters, Thanh Lam said: “AI is a part of life, but it can never replace human creativity. Humans have emotions — technology simply cannot compare.”

She added with a smile: “Some people joke that robots may one day sing better than professional singers, even me. But after working directly with AI-powered audio software, I can say for sure that artificial intelligence can never match the human brain and heart.”

Despite rapid technological advancement, Thanh Lam remains steadfast in her belief in the emotional essence of music — the very quality that has defined her artistry throughout her nearly 40-year career. The singer of ‘Giọt Nắng Bên Thềm’ continues to appear regularly in major art programs, reaffirming her place as one of Vietnam’s leading divas.

Recently, it was announced that Thanh Lam will perform in the Jazz Concert – IMMERSED, a special event bringing together some of the most renowned names in contemporary jazz.

The concert will feature Sir Niels Lan Doky, the internationally acclaimed Vietnamese-Danish jazz pianist often hailed as a “Knight of Jazz,” who has performed at Carnegie Hall (U.S.), Royal Albert Hall (U.K.), and Blue Note (Japan).

Joining him are celebrated musicians Felix Pastorius (bass guitar, U.S.) and Jonas Johansen (drums, Denmark), who will perform in Ho Chi Minh City on November 15.

Thanh Lam revealed that she first collaborated with Niels Lan Doky more than 20 years ago on the album Asian Sessions, when she was 30 and had just welcomed her third child.

“Now that he’s returning to Vietnam, I’m truly happy to reunite with him. During the upcoming concert, I’ll perform songs we recorded for his CD. It’s a mix of nervousness and excitement.”

The diva will also perform a special duet with Hà Trần, another prominent Vietnamese vocalist. “We’ve been discussing our performance carefully. Singing jazz allows us a wide emotional range and spontaneity, so when Hà Trần and I share the stage, I believe we’ll let our emotions lead the way.”

She also praised Phạm Hoàng Nam, the concert’s director, calling him “a perfectionist and a man of great precision.”

“I’m a perfectionist too, so I believe we’ll work in great harmony. With an intimate audience of just around 500 guests and such an extraordinary ensemble of artists, everyone is pushing themselves to create a truly perfect night of music.”
