Harmonizing Heritage and Jazz: When Art Leads Emotion

From an art exhibition to a Jazz concert, audiences in Ho Chi Minh City were immersed in a space where culture, knowledge, and emotion intersect—each artistic expression telling a vivid and compelling story.

GEM Center on the evening of November 15 came alive with artistic vibrancy as the Living Heritage – Heritage for the Future exhibition and the Jazz Concert – IMMERSED concluded nearly a month of cultural activities, offering a rich multi-sensory journey for the public. This was a convergence of art, intellect, and humanistic spirit—where viewers were invited to immerse themselves in the refined values of contemporary Vietnamese life.

The Living Heritage exhibition guided visitors through an artistic space blending calligraphy, multimedia, and installation art, telling the stories of Vietnamese figures with global influence. Highlights included inspiring individuals across medicine, arts, and culture such as Associate Professor – Dr. – Physician Phan Toan Thang, a leading scientist in regenerative medicine known for developing umbilical membrane stem cell extraction technology—now patented in more than 80 countries; Sir Niels Lan Doky, the Vietnamese-born Jazz Knight; and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xuan Phuong—an inspirational figure celebrated for her “young at heart” spirit and her recognition in BBC 100 Women 2024.

Another centerpiece of the exhibition was the calligraphy artwork by the late Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh featuring the two Han characters “An Trú” (Peaceful Abiding), displayed alongside an ikebana arrangement by artist Nixon Tran. This serene space invited visitors to reconnect with inner balance, where art and mindfulness intertwined.

In addition, audiences experienced music performed on a C. Bechstein piano, explored the Aroma Therapy collection “The Universal Within,” and discovered the Lifestyle creations of “Living Heritage”—all harmoniously blending artistry with philosophical living.

On the same evening, the Jazz Concert – IMMERSED transformed GEM Center into a dynamic stage with the presence of Niels Lan Doky alongside international musicians Felix Pastorius (bass) and Jonas Johansen (drums), joined by leading Vietnamese artists such as People’s Artist Thanh Lam, Ha Tran, People’s Artist Hoang Anh, and saxophonist Quyen Thien Dac—offering performances that were deeply jazz-rooted yet infused with Vietnamese essence.

Meticulously staged, the program crafted a multi-sensory experience where music, space, and emotion intertwined—inviting the audience into a journey exploring the refined rhythm of contemporary Vietnamese life.
