How Multilingualism Protects Your Brain
A large-scale study from researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine found that multilingualism may be associated with slower brain aging and a reduced risk of cognitive decline.
The researchers suggest that regularly using and switching between multiple languages provides continuous mental exercise.
This sustained cognitive effort strengthens neural pathways involved in memory, attention and executive control. Over time, these strengthened pathways may help delay age-related neurological decline.
As a result, multilingual individuals often show greater cognitive resilience throughout later life.
