Nighttime Scent Exposure Boosts Cognitive Performance by 226% in Older Adults

Older adults who were exposed to seven different scents—one each night through a bedside diffuser—for six months showed a remarkable 226% improvement in cognitive performance, according to a study published in Frontiers in Neuroscience.

While the fragrance intervention was simple and low-effort, its impact was significant: participants demonstrated stronger verbal memory and measurable changes in a key brain pathway involved in learning and decision-making. This suggests that consistent nighttime olfactory enrichment may be a powerful, noninvasive way to support brain health as we age.
