Nighttime Sleep and Cellular Repair
Scientists have found that human cells engage in increased repair and recovery processes during nighttime sleep. Research published in the Journal of Pineal Research shows that circadian rhythms and melatonin secretion play a key role in regulating cellular repair, antioxidant activity, and DNA protection during the night. Multiple review articles in the journal explain that melatonin enhances mitochondrial function and reduces oxidative stress, creating optimal conditions for cell restoration while the body is at rest. Experimental studies reported in the Journal of Pineal Research also demonstrate that disruption of nighttime light exposure impairs these repair mechanisms at the cellular level. These findings collectively support the conclusion that nighttime biology is essential for maintaining cellular health and long-term physiological resilience.
