NGUYEN PHUONG LAM

HUMANITY

Nguyễn Phương Lam is the embodiment of Western individualism, taken to its absolute extremes of finance, success, and freedom. And yet, he is also the living antithesis to the question, "What is the point of so much money?"

Having traversed peaks and valleys, from abundance to lack, his life resembles a "pilgrimage to a high hill"—and the pilgrim walks on.

Our dialogue, therefore, is like that of two companions on a spiritual path: when weary, we pause and tell stories. About what has passed and what is to come. About the ego being confronted and gradually extinguished, the shadows, and the private ruminations... all to touch upon his—and humanity's—most searing, persistent question: What is the meaning of life?

In him, Humanity is the journey through material affluence, only to return to true wealth for the service of humankind.

QUOTES

Having once stood atop the peaks of the financial world on Wall Street, where money is worshipped as the ultimate power, Nguyễn Phương Lam chose instead to return to a spiritual journey—a transformation dedicated to service. He now conceives of success not in terms of assets or power, but by the depth of one's consciousness. “The primary purpose of this human life is to elevate consciousness daily.”

Human beings cannot develop without material means. Poverty, it is said, cannot nurture noble values. What is your perspective on this?

Money is a useful tool. The mistake lies not in the tool itself, but in the moment we stop using money as a tool and begin to worship it and chase after it. We also forget that money is only one form of wealth. There are other forms we can offer for the benefit of the community—our time, our empathy, our knowledge.

Pursue a conventional career if you wish, but never lose your spiritual orientation. Everything in this life has a cost. The price of worshipping money is this: while accumulating material wealth, we also accumulate a great deal of baggage—rubbish—in the form of bad habits and spiritual blindness.

It takes a long time and tremendous effort to clear away that rubbish. I paid a heavy price for this lesson. I was fortunate that, in the end, I did not lose my soul in the process.
