Knight Of Jazz

SIR NIELS LAN DOKY

LOVING

It is a rare thing for an honor to perfectly befit the virtue of its recipient. Yet for Niels Lan Doky, the title of “Knight” feels entirely preordained. In his presence, this becomes all the more evident. His career is a testament to everything the term “world-class” entails, and he personally exudes the quintessence of a sophisticated Nordic intellect, harmoniously blended with the refined elegance of an Eastern patrician.

And so, when he speaks of his father, of Vietnam, of the Orient, it all feels at once distant and yet profoundly intimate—an ancestral inspiration that is also, undeniably, part of his very being. A conversation with him is like a jazz improvisation weaving through a celestial melody, transporting the listener to an immense realm of music, love, and profound human connection.

It is a place where true Loving (Quý) is defined not only by artistic excellence, but by the boundless compassion that connects all human hearts.

Niels Lan Doky (Vietnamese name: Do Ky Lan, born in 1963), one of the world's most admired jazz pianists of Vietnamese descent, carries both Vietnamese and Danish heritage. The international press has bestowed extraordinary praise upon him: Swing Journal (Japan) called him “the best pianist of his generation,” The New York Times (USA) described his music as “fresh and provocative,” and El Diario (Spain) honored him as “one of the most important European pianists of the last 50 years.”

QUOTES

In his music, improvisation is the soul. He plays as one engages in a living conversation—unscripted, unrepeated. He believes steadfastly that "there are no wrong notes," because jazz does not seek sterile perfection; it seeks the vibrant, singular pulse of the present moment. In that state, music becomes a pure dialogue between the artist, space, and time.

If you were to leave a legacy for the next generation, what would it be and why?

Both in music and in life, I would say: follow your heart, and let life take you to unknown destinations. Don't be afraid of mistakes—turn every wrong note into a good one by what you play after. That is the essence of improvisation, and it is the essence of life.
